Am I Eligible for Traffic School in Florida?

Last updated: September 16, 2026 | Reviewed for accuracy by Eric Creditor, Co-Founder, TrafficSchool.com

The Short Answer

Many Florida drivers with noncriminal moving violations are eligible for traffic school, but eligibility is not automatic.

It depends on the type of citation, whether you hold a commercial license, the vehicle you were driving, and your previous use of Florida's traffic school option, known as the Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) election.

What Determines Eligibility

Several factors can affect whether you qualify for traffic school in Florida:

  • License Type: You do not hold a Commercial Driver License (CDL) or Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP).
  • Vehicle Driven: You were driving a noncommercial motor vehicle when you received the citation.
  • Citation Type: Your ticket is an eligible noncriminal moving violation, such as failing to stop at a stop sign, failing to obey a traffic signal, or making an improper turn.
  • 12-Month Limit: You have not elected traffic school for another citation within the preceding 12 months.
  • Lifetime Limit: You have elected traffic school fewer than eight times in your lifetime.

Some violations do not qualify for the voluntary BDI election. This includes speeding 30 mph or more over the posted limit and violations that require a mandatory court hearing.

What You Should Do

Start by checking whether your citation and driving history meet Florida's BDI eligibility requirements.

If they do, do not miss the election deadline. You must make the traffic school election with the Clerk of Court handling your citation within 30 days of receiving the ticket. Complete that step before taking your FLHSMV-approved BDI course, and finish the course by your required deadline.

Expert Insight

"Simply enrolling in a course does not mean your ticket qualifies. Course providers don't determine your eligibility, and signing up won't notify the court. Always confirm your eligibility and make your traffic school election with the Clerk of Court before enrolling."

Bottom Line

You are generally eligible for Florida traffic school if you meet Florida's driver-license requirements, received an eligible noncriminal citation, and have not exceeded the limit of one election per 12 months or eight elections per lifetime.
