What are common reasons you CANNOT go to traffic school for a ticket?

Court Approved

- question from 2/25/2020 by Gil, filed under Court Approved and 2 Tickets

You are also NOT eligible for traffic school if you have gone to traffic school for another ticket that you got in the last 18 months

Hello Traffic School,

I had taken traffic school before about 2 months ago for a speeding ticket in San Diego County CA. I just received another speeding ticket in Vista CA. After paying the ticket the court approved me for traffic school. I don't know how to sign up again for another course?

TrafficSchool.com Says

Good Afternoon Gil-

Thank you for choosing TrafficSchool.com for your traffic safety needs. The DMV only allows you to take traffic school once every 18 months which is calculated from the violation dates. If you are attempting to register again with the same email address in a short time, then our system is set up to help avoid another registration since you are likely not eligible for traffic school again.

The different county courts do not communicate with each other, which is why the Vista court may have approved you for traffic school despite you already having taken traffic school recently for another ticket. The way the system is setup, it is ultimately up to you, the DMV licensed driver, to determine your traffic school eligibility. The DMV will not remove the point for your second ticket if it was received within 18 months from the first ticket.

From the court website:

You CANNOT go to traffic school for:
• Equipment offenses
• Non-moving offenses (like parking offenses)
• Misdemeanors
• Offenses with a mandatory court appearance
• Alcohol- or drug-related offenses
• Offenses in a commercial vehicle

You are also NOT eligible for traffic school if you have gone to traffic school for another ticket that you got in the last 18 months.

There are other reasons you may not be eligible for traffic school. For more information on eligibility for traffic school, see the California Rules of Court, rule 4.104.
