Following a Truck and Space Cushions

Feedback

- question from 4/16/2020 by Marcio, filed under Feedback and Traffic School Course

Would you say that we should increase the distance in front of a truck to ten or 15 car lengths because we need to consider the TOTAL STOPING DISTANCE of the truck ?

Hi TrafficSchool team

First of all congratulations for the webpage it is really helping me to improve my driving skills. But let me add one specific point when you say:

When following a truck stay about 20-25 car lengths behind. This will better allow you to see the road ahead. This also leaves more room for braking. A safe driving distance in front of a truck is at least four car lengths. Make sure you can see the truck's headlights in your inside rear-view mirror.

I would say that we should increase the distance in front of a truck to ten or 15 car lengths because we need to consider the TOTAL STOPING DISTANCE of the truck (is pretty much higher than a car).

Thank you
Marcio

TrafficSchool.com Says

Hello Marcio-

Thank you for your kinds words and reaching out with your feedback!

To be a safe driver, you need space all around your vehicle. When things go wrong, space gives you time to think and to take action. While this is true for all drivers, it is very important for large vehicles. They take up more space and require more space for stopping and turning.

One good rule for how much space you should keep in front of you is at least 1 second for each 10 feet of vehicle length at speeds below 40 mph. At greater speeds, you must add 1 second for safety. For example, if you are driving a 40-foot vehicle, you should leave 4 seconds between you and the vehicle ahead. In a 60-foot rig, you will need 6 seconds. Over 40 mph, you would need 5 seconds for a 40-foot vehicle and 7 seconds for a 60-foot vehicle.

It is because of feedback such as yours that helps us continuously improve our program and we do greatly appreciate your time in sending this.

We know you have a choice when it comes to traffic schools and we appreciate you for choosing TrafficSchool.com.
