How Online Driver's Ed in Virginia Works

  1. Successfully Complete Our Drivers Ed Course Online
If you are under the age of 18 and home-schooled, you will need to provide a Certificate of Completion from this course when applying for your permit.
  2. Go to the Virginia DMV to Apply for a Virginia Learner's Permit
To earn a learner's permit in the state of Virginia, you must be at least 15½ years old. When you apply for a learner's permit, you must show legal documentation (social security number, proof of Virginia Residency, etc.) You will also complete the application process for your VA driver's license and make payment for both your permit and license.
  3. Pass the Vision Test and the Knowledge Exam
The two-part knowledge exam is taken on a computer and tests 1) traffic signs and 2) your general knowledge of motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques.
  4. Receive Your Learner's Permit
When you pass the two-part exam, a DMV representative will then take your photo and have you sign a signature pad. Your information is typically processed while you wait and the DMV will call out your name (or number) when your learner's permit is ready for pick-up at a DMV window.
